I'm trying phoca download which seems to be its main competitor ?
I'm not sure if it's a good idea to try it out, but I'm sure it's a good idea to try it out.

Have you already installed the Lite version? - The lite version does not contain the optional folder protection, this feature is only available in the pro version of the module. On my demo website you can see only the public files if you are not logged in:

And when you are logged in you can see (and access) the "hidden" aka private files too:

about phoca download: yes and no - phoca download has another approach - it is one of these "huge" components with lots of features. I have created agile Downloads module to minimize the "overhead" for those who simply and easy wants to add some downloadable content to the website.
